CS explorer

CS explorer is a utility that facilities working with CS suite input/output files and folders that represent CS suite projects, parameter databases, scenarios, and scenario outputs.

This program resembles the Windows Explorer file manager. Indeed many of the Windows Explorer functions are replicated and directory navigation is the same as in Windows Explorer.

CS explorer has an additional panel at the bottom of the Explorer window with buttons and other controls that are specific to the current directory context. For example: when the current selected directory is a CropSyst project directory, the control panel will display functions specifically for project management. When the current directory is the project Scenarios directory, functions for scenario management are displayed, etc.

Functions for the indentified current context are displayed by default but all functions are always available, simply clicking on the context tab/button.

Prior to 2019 only the functions relevent to the current context were displayed/avaiable. (although one could override context, this was cumbersome and not intuitive).

The context control panels that appear in CS Explorer roughly follow the sequence of steps necessary to create simulation runs. So CS Explorer sort of helps to guide the user in the process of creating simulation project parameter files and ultimately run scenarios and view outputs.

CS explorer recognizes the following contexts:

Abritrary

Projects can be created in any arbitrary directory

Project

Parameter database, scenarios and special modules that comprise a project.
The project context view replaces the functionality of the Project editor of version 4.

Database

Master, project, or scenario level database directory for storing parameter files.
The database context view replaces the functionality of the Database editor of version 4.

Scenarios

Stores scenarios created by the user.
The scenarios context view replaces the functionality of the /Created scenarios\ tabpage of the project editor.

Scenario

Stores scenario output and an optional scenario level database directory.

Scenario output

Stores scenario simulation run output files. Functions are provided for viewing and manipulating output.

Weather

Under a database directory, this directory stores UED weather data files. Functions are provided for editing UED files, importing weather data, using ClimGen and the UED spatial interpolator
The weather view replaces the functionality of the /Weather\ tabpage of the database editor.

Soil

Under a database directory, this directory stores CropSyst soil parameter files. Functions are provided for editing soil file, and converting soil file formats from other models.
The Soil view replaces the functionality of the /Soil\ tabpage of the database editor.

Rotation

CropSyst rotation parameter files
The rotation view replaces the functionality of the /Rotation\ tabpage of the database editor.

Crop

CropSyst crop parameter files
The crop view replaces the functionality of the /Crop\ tabpage of the database editor.

CropSyst Management

CropSyst management parameter files.
The management view replaces the functionality of the /Management\ tabpage of the database editor.

Biomatter

CropSyst biomatter parameter files.
The biomatter view replaces the functionality of the /Biomatter\ tabpage of the database editor.

Format

CropSyst report format files and Tabular Data Format description files.
The Report format view replaces the functionality of the /Format\ tabpage of the database editor.

CS Explorer provides all the functions that are in the CropSyst version 4 CS suite starting menu/project manager, project editor, parameter database editor, and scenario output manager. CS Explorer now replaces these editors and utilities.

CS explorer and Windows file type associations

If Excel (XLS) and text (TXT) file extensions are associated with spreadsheet and text editor programs respectively, you can double click on the report filename to open and view the report.
