UED import wizard

The UED import wizard is a utility to convert weather data from a number of formats to UED format database file.

  1. Select the format to import from. There are two options for weather file format.

In either case (standardized or tabular format) the import utility works the same.

Usually at this point you can go directly to "Select files and import" but it may be desirable to select the weather stations to import and/or specify the output database file (if needed).

  2. Some file formats support weather data from multiple weather stations in a single input file so you have some options for selecting which weather stations to import. Typically these weather station is identified by some ID code or number, or in some cases by station name or city.

In the case one or more station IDs are selected, some weather reporting agencies have provided a list of weather stations covered by their database. A drop down list or check box may be available listing the weather stations that can be selected. For databases covering a large number of stations, the weather stations are sorted by region (country, province, state or some other region) so an additional drop down list is used to select the region the reporting agency sorts their data by.

You can enter the ID of one station to be selected. When a single station is selected, the name of the UED database will usually also be displayed.

You can leave the station ID blank. In this case, the import utility may generate a UED database file for each station encountered in the import file.

  3. Most weather files specify in some manner the ID of the weather station. In cases where the weather station is not specified in the format of the weather file, it will be necessary to provide a name of the UED database file to be created to store the imported data.

  4. Press the [Select files and import] button. Use the file requestor to select one or more files that are in the specified format. In some case the files in the specified format have a fixed file extension, in that case only those file are displayed in the file requestors. Other formats may have no restriction on the file extension, so make sure to select only those files that are of the specified format. (Usually the import utility will identify if the file is not in the right format and will abort the importation if the wrong type of file is selected).

Some formats use a single file for all years and all available stations. In this case, you usually select the one file.

Some formats use separate files for each year and/or each station. In this case, select all the files to be imported for either the one station need or all the desired stations.

When you press the [Open] button selecting the files highlighted in the file requestor, the importation will start immediately.

Most import format utilities are console mode programs and will display a simple black console mode window will minimal runtime progress display.

If an error is encountered, an error message will be displayed and you will be prompted to continue.

If the importation is successful, the import format utility simply closes with no further response.

If multiple input files were selected, the import utility may be started for each file.

  5. Most reporting agencies provide geolocation information either in the data file itself or with a weather station list which we have included in the CS_suite/ClimGen distribution. For these "known" weather stations, geolocation data will be automatically recorded in the UED database. In cases where geolocation data is not available, it is recommeded that you edit the UED files and verify the geolocation information and add any missing data.

You should also edit the UED file to verify the imported data. Simply click on the listed UED file icon to open the UED file with the UED weather editor

  6. After the import is complete, click the [Close] button to exit the import utility. You can go back to one of the previous pages and/or selected addition formats and files but this usually isn't necessary unless you forgot a file or some files were stored in a different directory or another format.
